Bad breath from keeping my mouth closed all the time?
Posted by admin under Dental
lovexoxo asked:
I have had breath problems for a while and have tried quite a few things to cure it. I keep my mouth closed all the time, except when I talk! I even keep it closed while I sleep. It’s just a habit. Do you think this could add to the problem? Like maybe my mouth needs fresh air or something? Just curious! Please give me your opinion.

A main cause of bad breath is sulfur build up in your mouth. There’s no real way around that, especially when we sleep. In fact it’s worse when we sleep because we are not swallowing our saliva as much.
Also, do you floss regularly? That has allot to do with bad breath too.
And then if you have cavities, you’ll need to get them fixed, that’s another cause.
Good luck.

Bad breath is usually caused by bacteria. The reason we get told to brush our teeth a lot is to remove the bacteria from our mouths. Obviously this hasn’t worked for you so…
- there might be something in your teeth that the toothbrush can’t reach. So maybe try a mouthwash. I know you might have tried this but you didnt say what you’d already tried. Also, I don’t go in for flossing much but it might be worth trying that to see if something gets stuck. Thing is, a tiny bit of food stuck between teeth might not be a problem but we’re very good at detecting the smell of the bacteria that are in it, so it can make our breath stink.
- also see if you might have some cavity or hole in your tooth someplace that might be where the smell is coming from, same as the bit of food above.
Another thing it might be is some bacteria that is resistant to toothpaste and mouthwash. Ask your pharmacist for advice, but the one I use periodically is called Corsodyl, and contains Chlorhexidine Digluconate – ask your pharmacist about this, you only use it now and then but it kills stuff that others can’t.
Good luck.

To get rid of bad breath, you have to have your teeth professionally cleaned every 6 months. Then, daily you have to floss, brush with an electric toothbrush, and brush your tongue. Finish with a hydrogen peroxide rinse. Good luck to you.

Closing your mouth will reduce the amount of bad breath smelled by others, however, it does not cure the problem. Up to 90 percent of bad breath is caused by the bacteria that grows on the top of the tongue, they produce sulfur containing compounds that smell, that is bad breath. Mints, gum, and mouthwash just cover up the smell for a short time. The only way to really cure bad breath is to get ride of the bacteria by cleaning your tongue. The best device to clean your tongue is OraBrush, which was specifically designed to clean the tongue. Learn more about the cause and cure of bad breath at
