It might be something in his stomach that is making his breath stink rather than something in his mouth. Might be something you are feeding, or did you check his teeth to see if any are decayed. Time to see the vet?

Depending on how old he is, he might need a professional dental cleaning. Since he is a shihtzu, also make sure when he is groomed that the hair around his mouth is also clipped, otherwise it can get/stay in his mouth and begin to smell. Also, make sure you are feeding him good, quality food (no moist n meaty, mighty dog, alpo, etc). There are treats that will over time help, but there is also a solution you can add to his water that will help breath over time. Usually you need to be constant for 6-8 weeks to see a result. Talk to your vet about your options for him.

Your dog may need a professional dental cleaning. Then, once the teeth are cleaned, you can purchase an additive for the water as well as chews that will help prevent plaque.

Severe gum disease can cause other health problems, so you want to have it taken care of by a professional ASAP.

The best way really is taking your dog to the vet and get his teeth professionally cleaned. That pretty much eliminates the doggy breath smell.

If those haven’t worked, you might want to take your dog to the vet. They actually scrape the tarter off. It worked wonders for my dog, and THEN the snacks that freshen breath and the brushing will work to keep his breath fresh. Seriously, this is what worked for us. Best wishes for fresher breath.

Everyone here has given you really good advice. I have miniature pinschers and they too have really bad breath.

I have their teeth cleaned often and make sure they don’t have any decay going on as that is often a sign of other health problems in dogs.

Small dogs need crunchy food to help keep their teeth clean. Wet food has a tendency of getting stuck between the gums and the teeth, then packing in and getting really rank smelling. So brushing your dogs teeth on a regular basis is a really good idea.

I also use a syringe and dribble a small amount of hydrogen peroxide along the gum line … you will see it bubble, because that is signs of where it is attacking the bacteria at the gum line. Same as with a human. After your done dribbling the peroxide, make sure the dog has plenty of fresh water to get a drink and “rinse” … this seems to help with the bad breath.

Make sure your dog is getting the crunchy food, not the moist or wet food…

What are you feeding him?If you are feeding him canned food, then that is why.Change his diet to a good quality dry food and small chicken necks and small brisket bones.Canned food cant clean thier teeth as they eat which is why tarter buildes up on thier teeth.Get the vet to check for and treat any excisting tooth and gum problems. If your dog doesnt like the new food straight away use Liver treat sprinkles when you introduce his new diet.

Have the vet check him out to make sure he doesn’t have gum disease or anything. If it’s just simple bad breath, have his teeth cleaned, or try brushing them from home. I am also a big fan of dental treats. A great brand to try out are Bright Bites. They are designed specifically to clean a dog’s teeth and gums while he chews. Good luck!
