It may, in the long run, but only if the salt water will kill the offending bacteria. It is common for dentists to recommend this after a tooth extraction or dental surgery. This helps to prevent infections. Generally bad breath would be due to different conditions. Use a good cleansing mouthwash instead and speak to your dentist as you may have a bigger problem.

Salt is a natural sterilizer and can prevent or kill an infection. You can add 1/4 tsp of salt to 2 oz of water and a couple drops of mint oil to make your own mouthwash. The salt kills many of the causes of bad breath, but doesn’t actually make your breath smell fresh (hence the mint).
