My dog constantly has bad breath?
Posted by admin under Dogs
Havenwood asked:
Can I give her a small portion of a Listerine Breath Strip every once in a while? I tried breath strips for dogs and it didn’t help at all.
She has her teeth brushed when we go to the vet.
You don’t understand the extent to which her breath smells. I don’t even want to be around her. It’s not normal dog breath.

No, have you tried taking her to the vet? You also need to brush a dogs teeth every once in awhile or give them a dental bone. Domestic dogs have a hard time keeping their teeth clean. There is peanut butter flavored toothpaste you can buy and finger brushes.

Don’t give her people food enless it doesn’t hert her. If she is a big dog try having her teeth clean by the vet. If she is small brush her teeth your self. Goodluck. I LOVE DOGS!!!!!!!!!

DO NOT GIVE YOUR DOG ANY HUMAN PRODUCTS!! It is different for us. They will get sick if they eat that stuff. Usually their breath smells because of what they eat (especially wet food), if they arent clean they tend to lick themselves EVERYWHERE (so dont let them lick you). Groom it more like a full bath once a month or week and see if that helps. Also othe treats like bones give them bad breath. Especially pig ears!

Listerine isnt going to solve anything and very well will make the dog extremely ill. Dogs cant handle all that mint and alchol in that stuff. Besides a dogs breath shouldnt smell terribly, It should have some odor but nothing unbearable. What is happening is your dog has one of several possible problems. Its having digestion problems with the food and is having burps and gas from the foods, or a rotten tooth, or something stuck in the gums, or gingivitis, or trapped food in the teeth. First of all go to the pet store get some doggy toothpaste and a finger brush. Give the dog a good teeth brushing. Cut out any canned dog food or soft foods and treats that you might be feeding, and only hard kibble. Do the brushing every other day for 2 weeks and hard kibble only for 2 weeks also. Then if her bad breath persists, call and get appointment with vet for a professional cleaning and check up. If all that doesnt work its probably the dog food shes on.

PLEASE try a product called PETZLIFE. it is amazing! iwas a vet tech for 7 years, and part of my job was cleaning teeth under anestetic….very nasty not to mention dangerous. i am now a groomer and only use and reccomend this product. it kills bacteria in the mouth thus breaking down tartar, you will notice fresher breath right away. and not just covered up. go to their website and look at the product.you will be glad you did.

Every dog has bad breath, fortunately, there are dog biscuits at the store for bad breath… which is usually shaped like a toothbrush.

NO Listerine. Have her teeth CLEANED by your vet. Not just brushed but a full DENTAL. That smell is probably infection.

The constant bad breath is an indicator that you should set-up a dental appointment with your veterinarian.
Like humans, animals need oral/dental care and can have problems like gum disease caused from tarter build-up, which can lead to stinky breath. Your pets diet may also be contributing to the problem.
I would try inspecting the dog’s mouth to make sure that there aren’t any tooth obstructures (cracks/breaks/missed teeth) that may be contributing to the problem as well.
Look for any redness or swollen areas in the gums (word of advice: if gums are white/purple/blue < get the dog to a vet asap), bleeding, and any yellow or brown crust (this would be a good indicator of tarter build-up).
After a dental cleaning, your veterinarian can help provide you with a diet that will help ensure that your dog doesn’t have many problems. You can also use a doggy toothbrush and doggy toothpaste for the problem to keep tarter build-up to a minimum.
If you’d like more information about this, there’s a great resource here:
Hope this helps!

carry your dog to see a veterinary dentist, this condition is usually associated with some decay in the dog’s mouth like a rotten tooth.

No people food, put her on a good quality dry dog good no moist dog food, observe her when she’s outside to make sure she’s not eating poop (yes, some eat their own poop), if you have litter boxes move them somewhere that she can’t get to them because she may be eating the cats poop, brush her teeth at least once a week with a toothpaste for dogs, Do not use listerine breath strips because they are not made for dogs and your going to make her sick, bring her to the vet and get her teeth checked maybe she has a bad tooth or an infection or something. I used pedigree breath busters and they work pretty good. Also this may sound gross but if your dog is not spayed and she is going into heat this will make her breath smell bad because she will be licking herself. I’m not trying to offend anyone by saying that but it’s true.
