bad breath
K S asked:

I floss like crazy its amazing that I don’t have gaped teeth because of it. But I brush day and night and gargle (Listerine) afterwords. But its seems like 4 hrs after I get into work my breath smells like I didn’t even brush gargle or floss. So I carry gum to “disguise”. Its not really bad breath just more I can feel its gross. I’m in between insurances right now so what does anybody suggest? Any home remedies or really good toothpastes and gargling solutions that anybody swears by?

    it may not be your dental health. You may have acid reflux and that is the only symptom you notice now. You should have a dr check it out.

    Sometimes bad breath is caused by stomach not digesting food properly. You can take a probiotic from a health food store to get that part taken care of. You can also get Chlorophyll while your there and put some in your bottled water. It tastes like mint and also takes away armpit odor when your drinking it.

    If you have acid reflux then you should take a tsp of Braggs vinegar before each meal. Yes it tastes horrible but you can wash it down with water and it will take away acid reflux just that easy.

    Braggs is the only brand that will work because of the mother in it. Health food store to buy as well.

    I would stop with the listerine… causes throat cancer and kills good stomach bacteria.

    If your teeth are hurting then you need to get to a dentist because sometimes odors are from bad teeth.

    Halitosis (bad breath) is a condition caused by many factors.
    -Xerostomia (dry mouth) causes bad breath because there is not enough saliva to cleanse the bacteria in your oral cavity. Dry mouth is a side effect for hundreds of frequently used medications like antihistamines, bronchodilators, and antihypertensives.
    -Another cause of bad breath could be the inability of cleansing your circumvallate papilla which are located at the VERY back of your tongue. There are 8-12 of them and you can see them if you stick your tongue out very far. They are arranged in an upside down “V” shape. A tongue scraper will help with that (You may gag).
    -Periodontal disease also causes a “fetor oris” which is a VERY distinct smell. Abscesses can also cause bad breath.
    -Also, when brushing your tongue make sure to NEVER use toothpaste because there are chemicals in the toothpaste that trap the sulfur producing bacteria in the tongue. Use a soft toothbrush with water when brushing your tongue.
    -Post nasal drip can also contribute to halitosis. The bacteria in the back of the tongue LOVE feeding off this and create smelly byproducts as a result.

    gums and mints may not help eliminate bad breath since it has sugar it can contribute in making things worse. if you want to prevent the cause of your bad breath, the first step that you have to do is to know the cause of it. then treatments that are appropriate can be sought from a dental expert. one best way to get rid of bad breath is to keep a good eye on oral care and habits. and keep the mouth hydrated all the time to keep bad bacteria at bay. for more tips about bad breath care visit

    Where does one turn for bad breath solutions? Is there some place where you can find the latest bad breath research so that you can find the latest advances in the treatment of this embarrassing condition before it completely ruins your social life? Well, the truth is that you should be consulting with a veritable “bad breath guru” each and every time you visit your dentist for those check-ups that you love so much. Unfortunately, very few of us even make to the office once a year, let alone every six months like we have been instructed since childhood.

    The reason so few people consult with their dentist about possible bad breath treatment is really twofold. First, there is a common misperception amongst most of us that bad breath problems are minor and often caused by the foods we eat. Secondly, no one wants to admit to having a problem with halitosis but failing to ask your dentist about a possible bad breath solution is just silly. After all, if this person can look into your mouth and fix cavities, perform root canals, and all the other “fun jobs” that go along with the profession – do you really think a little odor will be a problem? Besides, it’s a good bet that the dentist is already well aware of the problem – they are just waiting for you to ask.

    As for food being the source of your bad breath symptoms – this is partially true but not in cases of chronic halitosis. Unless you eat onions and garlic every day of the year, there is no chance that food is the problem. The foods we eat can cause short term bad breath symptoms because they become metabolized and pass through the lungs and then exhaled. However, as soon as the food passes from you system, they will go away. There actually a number of potential causes of bad breath, including:

    * Gum disease
    * Large anaerobic bacteria population on back of tongue
    * Diabetes
    * Poor oral hygiene
    * Dry Mouth
    * Pneumonia
    * Kidney Disease
    * Acid Reflux

    In 90% of the cases, the source of the bad breath will be anaerobic bacteria living at the back of your tongue in a whitened layer of plaque. While we would like to think that good oral hygiene is enough to remove these bacteria, it can be very difficult to remove them by simply “brushing the tongue” as is recommended on many of the websites claiming to be experts in halitosis prevention and treatment. Once the bacteria and plaque have made a home, your dentist will need to perform a tongue scraping in order to really eradicate them in order to really treat the bad breath problem effectively.

    Now if gum disease is the cause of the bad breath, you should not need to ask about bad breath treatments. Your dentist will be able to tell immediately when gum disease is the problem from the smell alone. By treating the condition, the bad breath problem will also disappear.

    The point is that we need to turn to the experts when trying to deal with chronic bad breath because sometimes the condition is a symptom of a much larger medical problem that may require attention immediately. Thus, for the most accurate bad breath solutions, simply ask the people that know best!
