My guinea pig has bad breath?

I just noticed that my guinea pig’s breath smells really nasty.It didn’t before.Is that normal?

    No, it isn’t. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do except try to alter its diet.

    There could be various reasons for bad breath. He could have some digestion problems, respiratory disease, kidney problems, or a tooth or mouth abscess. Try giving him greenies, the stuff that dogs and cats use for bad breath. If it doesn’t approve you would have to get him to a vet. A course of antibiotics usually takes care of it. If he is very tamed, try to look at his teeth, and if you can, in the inside of his mouth. Sometimes sharp pieces of grass can penetrate the inside walls of their mouths and can cause nasty abscesses. The vet can easily removed it under anesthesia and will prescribe antibiotics if necessary.

    Hard to say…it could be any number of things from diet to exercise to living environment. Try calling your local vet, they’re usually pretty good about advice over the phone.
