Why does our dog have such TERRIBLE breath? Is there anything we can do about it?

Our dog is getting on in years, about 16 years old. She is a small dog, mixed breed, maybe some Jack Russell. For her age, she is quite frisky and in pretty good health. She has always had somewhat bad breath, but lately it is REALLY bad. Does anyone have any suggestions as to cause and cure?

Dogs have different salivary glands on thier tongues
producing various smells differing on what they eat.
Basically the crap that u feed them makes their breath smell bad.

The dog is not salivating enough. If this were a cartoon it would be easy to fix, because dogs are always salivating in cartoons. They do make fresh-breath dog biscuits. Maybe those would work. Or perhaps the vet has the best answer.

If simple brushing isn’t fixing the problem, she probably needs to go to the vet to get antibiotics. She probably has more than normal amounts of bacteria in her mouth right now. I have a dauchsund, and he was like that. The vet gave him some antibiotics, and his breath was fine within a couple of weeks. Then I had his teeth cleaned, and brush regularly. No more hallitosis.

what you acn do is give the dog a brush mouth or take him to a vet they would tell you what to do but dogs like to lick themselves and this also causes there breath to be smelly . heres

Pet store have real breath ments for dogs but dogs don’t like it. They said you can hid it in there food but dogs don’t fall for it. They have treats for it that dogs like or you should get a toothbrush and brush your dogs teeth. Also you can take your dog to the vet to get his teeth clean.

For some reason, a lot of small dogs are prone to tartar on their teeth. Their gums get infected and red, and breath gets really bad.
If your dog has bad tartar, you can talk to your vet about removing it, but he may say she’s too old (they usually give a general anesthesia), an antibiotic may be in order.
Be careful, because dental infection can cause several other more serious problems, including heart damage.
Best bet is go to the vet.

first take your dog to a vet to make sure it’s not rotting teeth causeing the breath issue. if not go to walmart in the pet section and by a small blue bottle of breath tabs made by a company called 8in1.

Foul breath in a dog, especially an older one can be a sign of something much more serious that simple tarter build up on the teeth.Bad breath can be a sign of anything from an infection to diabetes.Seeing as how you dog is older I would not recommend mints or anything else to just cover up the smell. You should take your dog to the vet,so he can make sure it’s not being caused by diabetes or something serious.
Added.
I meant to say can be serious at any age,but with yours being older I would be even more concerned.
