I get insomnia really bad all the time. I’m only 14, and since I get so little sleep from my insomnia, I go to bed really early, like at 9 or 9:30. But then I usually won’t fall asleep until 12 or 1 in the morning! It’s awful, and I’m always tired. I’ve tried everything though – I don’t eat/drink anything with sugar or caffeine before going to bed, I’ve made sure I’ve stopped excersising an hour before I go to bed but I excersise a lot during the day, I get off the computer an hour before sleeping. At night I’ve tried taking deep breaths and streching and relaxing my muscles. Nothing works!!! How can I get to sleep?!?!

Get some exercise during the day, but don’t exercise within an hour before bedtime. Also, eat lightly in the evening, and don’t eat right before you go to bed. Avoid alcohol. You can try drinking some sleepy time tea, which is very relaxing, and take a warm soothing aromatherapy bath before going to bed. If you wake up during sleep, try clearing your thoughts and think about something pleasant to relax you. If that doesn’t work, try some warm milk. Hope you get it resolved.
It’s so frustrating when you can’t sleep, and I prefer to avoid medicines, so opt for the home remedies.

Have you been diagonised with insomnia, or do you think you just have it? And also, walking with the mentality that “Nothing works!” is not a good thing.
I always read before bed, but my boyfriend uses this sensory therapy by this company called “origins”.
Personally it didn’t work for me, but I liked their stress stuff, it may also help:
What I like about origins is it’s all natural.
You know, you also say that you’re going to bed at 9. Maybe that’s too early? I’m usually asleep at 11:30, and to be considered an insomniac, you’re getting zero sleep.
Relax a little ok? But if you’re super worried, ask your doctor, but stay away from the meds pleeeeeeease.

I’ve used sleepy time tea about an hour before bed.But not alot I don’t how dependent your body can get to it.You really need to reduce your stress level. That’s most peoples problem that really traces back to everything that can be a problem in life.I don’t know how close you are to your parents you need to have them help you or your Doctor.

I can totally relate! (though i think you’ve got it worse than i do).
Maybe it’s stress that’s keeping you awake. If you have a certain problem with a friend at school or with grades, your brain might just be tossing and turning over that and is probably too busy to sleep. In this case, it won’t be enough just to calm your muscles or take deep breaths, but you’ll have to come to terms with whatever might be bothering you subconciously.
It could also be that you have too much energy. You exercise a lot through the day, and you seem to have a healthy routine, but maybe if you do something that drains you… not in a bad way though. Rather, if you read a really tedious book, your brain might put itself to sleep. I always get extra-tired at even the thought of opening my Advanced Algebra textbook and memorizing formulas.
If ALL that doesn’t work, I think you should let your parents know and have a doctor look at the situation. If you have a truly serious case of insomnia, I’m sure they can perscribe something for you!
Good luck!

You shouldn’t drink caffeine or sugar at all during the day (if it’s that bad). There should be at least three hours of no computer/TV, exercise, eating, etc before bed. Try reading a book that’s not full of action before going to bed (something boring).
If you’re not asleep within a maximum of 45 minutes you should get up and do something. Lying in bed longer than that is proven to keep you awake. Also, don’t use your bed for anything other than sleeping. Don’t watch tv, eat, or even talk on the phone in bed.
If you’re exercising more than you should, then that will keep you awake also. It’s a myth that more exercise makes you sleep better. Only moderate exercise will help you sleep.
The tryptophan in fresh turkey (not lunchmeat) and milk will make you sleepy so you should try at least drinking more milk.
If none of that works, then try taking less than 2mg of melatonin before bed (less than 2mg because of your age). It is a supplement that you could buy without a prescription. Don’t overdue it as long-term effects haven’t really been researched.
If even that doesn’t work, then you should see a doctor for something prescription like Ambien.

I have the same problem. I use over the counter sleeping pills. but they are not good to use for days on end. Although, I do because I have to get up at 6:30 a.m. for classes. It works, but it is adictive.

I read many of the other answers and there is some great information in there! I would combine the best ideas which would be:
1. Start your wind down with a hot bath or shower, but baths are more relaxing.
2. Fix yourself a glass of “Sleepytime Tea”, Lipton or some huge company like that makes it. Take your cup of tea to your bed and keep only a bedside light on in your room, preferably a light that you can control the dim on.
3.Read a book while you drink your tea. You will probably fall asleep shortly after, especially if you read one of your school text books!
If that still does not work, you need to talk to your parents about setting an appointment to see your doctor and they will most likely be able to prescribe you something to help you get to sleep quicker and sleep through the night! Best of luck to you!
