How can I control my bad breath?

bad breath
DSC asked:

I recently quit my job because my breath was so bad. People would back up and stare at my mouth. I’ve been to, two different dentist. They both say I have healthy teeth. I floss after every meal. I brush my teeth 3 times a day. I brush my tongue. I have a strict diet no spices no garlic. How can I control my bad breath, it’s ruinning my life?

  6. Softball Freak Says:

You brush your teeth normally. Take a breath mint. Eat a tick tack. Chew minty or smelly gum.

Often, old gum breath is just as bad as bad breath. What else does your doctor/dentist tell you? I can’t imagine having to leave your job… definitely try mints and mouthwash. The halitosis could be a sign of something else. See your doctor, too.

    *Gum helps
    * Brush your teeth after you eat. Keep a toothbrush at work to brush after eating.
    * Floss at least once a day. Proper flossing removes food particles and plaque from between your teeth.
    * Brush your tongue. Giving your tongue a good brushing removes dead cells, bacteria and food debris. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush your tongue with at least five to 15 strokes. Pay particular attention to the middle third of the tongue, where most of the bacteria tend to collect.
    * Clean your dentures well. If you wear a bridge or a partial or complete denture, clean it thoroughly at least once a day or as directed by your dentist.
    * Drink plenty of water. To keep your mouth moist, be sure to consume plenty of water — not coffee, soft drinks or alcohol. Chewing gum (preferably sugarless) or sucking on candy (preferably sugarless) also stimulates saliva, washing away food particles and bacteria. If you have chronic dry mouth, your dentist or doctor may additionally prescribe an artificial saliva preparation or an oral medication that stimulates the flow of saliva.
    * Use a fairly new toothbrush. Change your toothbrush every three to four months, and choose a soft-bristled toothbrush.
    * Schedule regular dental checkups. At least twice a year, see your dentist to have your teeth or dentures examined and cleaned.

Bad Breath is usually caused by the breakdown of proteins by bacteria somewhere in the mouth. Bad breath is not contagious, meaning you cannot catch it from someone else. Chronic bad breath, known as Halitosis, does not come from the stomach. The only odor that comes from the stomach is when you burp. Food eaten such as garlic and spicy foods once absorbed into the body can release odor through the lungs when you breathe. Food odors are transitory and should not be confused with bad breath. Human’s sense of smell has the ability to adjust to odor. Therefore, most people with halitosis are not aware of their bad breath.

If your paranoid after trying all this…here are some ways to test if your breath is bad…

    1. Lick the back of your hand. Let it dry for a few seconds and then smell. If you notice and odor, you have a breath disorder.

    2. Place dental floss between your back teeth and then smell the floss.

    3. While looking at the mirror, grab the tip of your tongue with a Kleenex and pull it out as far you can. If you see that the very back of your tongue is whitish in color, it may be a sign that you have bad breath.

    4. Ask the opinion of someone you can trust. Check your breath several times daily because your breath changes throughout the day.

    5. Professional use of a Halimeter will measures the concentration of volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) in the mouth.

The way i do it is, if ur by alot of people, i just dont talk and keep my mouth closed. Or u could always just by some tic tacs or even by some breath freshener from a gas station or a local qd or even a local dq or grocery stores.

  10. Chris R Says:

carry one of those 10 packs of gum, 5 gum is very good, so if you know ur breath is goin bad, just put a pice or two of gum in your mouth, thats happend to me before, have gum or strong breath mints with you every day, it helps alot

i would have to look more on it by researching but i could swear there is a condition where some ppl have chronic bad breathe. for time being, don’t quit your jobs due to the problem. chew gum instead (orbitz is a good kind in my opinion). also- like others’ have said, mouth wash is good to use. some ppl brush their teeth while on break at work.

  13. Channy rox Says:

get breath mints or chew gum!!

  14. googirl77 Says:

a lot if it has to do with stomache acid and bacteria on the tongue. after flossing and brushing use a tongue scrapper. and then use gargle. You have probably heard about a product called Breath rX. It actually works! If all else fails check that out:)
p.s. in Ariel’s answer she suggested seeing another dentist. I totally agree. A good dentist would give you possible causes and solution for the problem.

i would ask your dentist if he/she thinks you should see an E.N.T. specialist-maybe you have a problem with your tonsils or something. there can be small sacs in your tonsils that can collect bacteria and produce a bad odor, this could be your problem. generally bad breath caused by a dental related problem is from an infected tooth or gums or simply poor oral hygiene-if your dentist says you have a clean bill of dental health then its probably not coming from your teeth. good luck

People dont realize, its not just getting a taste, flavor, or smell out of your mouth with a mint, or mouthwash, its so much more!!! now fallow these simple rules, and you will have nice clean, not smelly breath:

First of all, its not just your toung! Its your whole mouth! MAKE SURE YOU BRUSH YOUR GUMS WELL!!!!!! they contibute greatly to bad breath! and when you brush, get deep into your mouth, back of the toung, side of jaw, ect…. This will REMOVE the unwanted resadue that causes bad breath! And if you arent taking care of your mouth, it may be your mouth, tainting your breath, not the food you eat!

Next, you should use mouthwash! Believe me i have delt with the same problem, and i tried to just get rid of the smell by rinsing with water and swishing mouthwash. This combines to make a funny smell! you need to clean your mouth, not cover it up with a different smell, or rinse out loose resadue. Now, i prefer using “Crest Pro Health” mouthwash. It doesnt sting, and it works great, and tastes GOOD! ( By the way, Crest Pro Health may cost more, but its well worth it, it works GREAT! that includes all their products by the way)

I would sudgest carreing mints around with you, small ones! like white tic tacs! those can really help too! and it only takes one! (besides, mint flavor has ALSO been proven to make you eat less, if you tend to eat alot, even when you arent hungry) and just carry them around, theer are many in a pack. and it is only needed when you get bad breath again. I like this method, but then you should brush your teath even better, cause of all the sugar. this may get alittle expensive for some people, but if you use it as breath fresheners, and not candy, it wont be too bad!

If you like gum, go with gum instead of tic tacs, however, in my case, i am a person whop chews gum for quick flavor, and nothing more. I think i f i chew gum past its peak of flavor, it actually WORSENS my breath! Try it, if it isnt for you, stop then.

If you can taste the breath, avoid beathing out of your mouth, and be careful when talking. dont sign either, or beath hard, that speads the smell. take small gentle breaths.

When you speak or breath, do so without containing air in your mouth, and avoid breathing in a way that you can feel it well in the back of your throut.

if this doesnt do much for you, i’m sorry. It must be aweful! i wish i had some more tips. if you want, you may email me at to tell me what you usually eat, sometimes foods arent known to make your breath bad, but do! If you dont want to email me, fruits, veggies, natural food, is better for your breath, while “man-made” food is more likely to make your breath bad. And of coarse water is the best drink. That is what i drink all the time! soda, fake juices, ect… who needs them anyway? Water is the best drink ever, its incredible, look up water if you want, and read some VERY interesting facts on how water can improve your whole body! And thats a big step to getting better breath!

Good luck! I hope these tips work for you. If they dont, i dont know what else to say, just go experimenting, see what works for you. what freshens YOUR breath. What foods make YOUR breath stink? ect…. once again, good luck!
