Dog with a blocked tear duct?
Posted by admin under Dogs
Sara asked:
Since it’s the holiday weekend, I haven’t been able to get a hold of a vet in our area, but I’ve noticed that my dog (3yo female Italian Greyhound) has been scratching and rubbing at her left eye quite a bit. It’s happened before, but it hasn’t been as long-lasting or consistent. Also, her eye leaks and has recently become a little inflamed, but not so swollen that she can’t see out if. I’m going to try to get her an appointment tomorrow or Wednesday when I can take off work, but until then, does anyone have any home remedies or tips for treating it? I’ve tried a warm compress, which she did not enjoy even though it was hardly lukewarm. If anyone has dealt with this issue before, I’d be grateful for any and all advice. Thank you!

Keep Your Breath Fresh
My puppies have blocked tear ducts and I wipe their eyes once a day with a piece of cotton wool soaked in warm water, which helps them.

Sounds like your dog has ectropion or entropion…..Very common in some breeds…You can try a warm compress but when you get to the vet he will discuss surgery to remove the issue and also eye drops for the inflammation…
Also possible to be a blocked tear duct…..
Look up entropion and ectropion..Its the eyelashes rubbing against the eye…

Well if it has happened once before, she could be allergic to something. I would go to the vet for the correct treatment instead of trying different remadies that might hut her.

Remedies for Halitosis
You can give your dog a Benadryl to help with the itching and just cleanse it with saline drops.
Putting a ice pack will keep it from swelling. My dog gets what I call sleep in his eyes but it is from allergies and treating it topically and with Benadryl will help.
Most of the time it comes from irritants but can come from diseases so make sure your vet gives you something to keep at home.
I have drops that I use and keep his eyes clear .
Hope that helps. BJ
