Does blood sugar increase if you sleep late?

Posted by admin under Diabetes

Isidro asked:

I have tried this before and it seems to work for me. When I wake up after sleeping 8 hours, my blood sugar reads under 100. When I sleep more than 8 hours (oversleep), my blood sugar will read more than 100 (around 108 to 122). Does anyone know why this happens, or is it just me? Also, does anyone have any home remedies or tips on how to bring down blood sugar (besides the usual – limit your carbs, and sugars..etc..)

p.s. – I also have high cholesterol. I take Metformen for the Diabetes and Crestor for high cholesterol. So far the cholesterol is under control. My blood sugar readings have been around 95 to 122.

Thanks in advance.

I think that is possible because I have noticed the same thing. I also have noticed that I can get up and check my blood sugar and then after eating nothing and checking it 2 or 3 hours later, it is higher. It doesn’t make any sense.

Its called The Somogyi effect. If your body starts to run low on blood glucose, your liver will dump sugar into your blood to raise it.

Your liver has emergency stores of sugar and since you didn’t get up and eat, these emergency stores are used. Normally this occurs in people taking insulin, but you are triggering it by sleeping in late and running low.

Be careful, if this happens repeatedly, you can end up becoming insensitive to hypoglycemia, which can get you into trouble.

Try eating a couple of whole grain crackers when you wake up, so that your body doesn’t dump its emergency stores of sugar into your bloodstream. Or just get up and have a normal breakfast instead of sleeping in so much.

This is a simplified explanation of what happens. If you want details see this link

    Good luck!
