Bad breath, or halitosis in medical terminology, is a very common problem. Though many people affected by it may not be aware that they suffer from bad breath, and it is important that they discover the problem soon. This is because bad breath is an “embarrassing” problem and sooner or later, people will turn away from you rather than face rotten breath. More than the problem itself is the worry that you may have this issue, without having someone close to you to bring your attention to it. It is comparatively easy to keep things under control providing you have a basic understanding of the causes of bad breath.

What Causes Bad Breath

If you are wondering what causes bad breath, here are some common culprits:

1. Food-related causes: Foods that have strong odors ? e.g., onion, garlic ? can cause temporary bad breath. Sometimes even brushing and flossing adequately are not enough in getting rid of the odors as they find their way into the blood stream after being digested. One quick-fix solution would be to avoid them, especially at social gatherings, or to have on hand an instant mouth freshener containing mint, cardmamom, and cloves to spray into you mouth immediately after the meal.

2. Mouth bacteria: Food particles that get stuck between the teeth after meals are a feasting ground for odor-causign bacteria to grow on. The solution is maintaining a structured and disciplined oral hygiene schedule that should include cleaning of the tongue, flossing and brushing your teeth the right way.

3. Medical causes: Certain medical conditions ? like diabetis and ketosis ? can also be a cause of bad breath. So it is imperative that you consult your dentist and if required, your physician if you suspect a medical condition to be the cause.

Eliminating What Causes Bad Breath

Because bad breath can be the result of various factors, one of the best ways to find what causes bad breath in your case is to consult a dentist on a regular basis. Blood tests can also spring a surprise and lay bare the real cause of your bad breath. You must remember that bad breath could be a symptom of something more serious and therefore getting a medical opinion is always a good idea. However, you must take adequate precautions to ward off bad breath ? running to the dentis or doctor every time that you have a problem is probably not a good idea, you need to ensure that your body is fit and fine and is well-immunised against various condition, and this includes bad breath.

Under normal circumstances, good habits and a structured regimen would be adequate actions to take to combat bad breath. So, stay away from tobacco and too much meat, restrict your intake of foods that create strong odours such as onions and garlic, and regularly brush and floss your teeth. This may sound like Mum talking, but it is good advice.

There are various OTC (over-the-counter) treatments available for bad breath. Sadly though, most of them are completely ineffectual and may even add to your problem.

There is one new product on the market ? Chlorine Dioxide Mouthwashes ?that claims to completely be able to eliminate bad breath. These mouthwashes claim to kill bad breath by attacking the sulfur compounds that cause bad breath, rather than just masking the smell as conventional mouthwashes do.

However, for all we know, these claims may be exaggerated because chlorine dioxide has been used for years in municipal water supply systems. Use your own judgment when buying one of these products, but there is probably no harm in giving it a try at least.

Home Remedies for Bad Breath

Bad breath is caused by odor-producing bacteria that grow in the mouth. When people don’t brush and floss regularly, bacteria accumulate on the bits of food left in the mouth and between the teeth. The sulfur compounds released by these bacteria make the breath smell.

Home remedies for bad breath

Brush your teeth with baking soda first, then rinse out your mouth with plain or warm, salty water. Follow this with regular toothpaste and you are on your way.

Floss your teeth daily. The gunk (plaque) between your teeth may be causing your bad breath.

Scrape your tongue with a spoon or one of those specially designed tongue scrapers. Get as far back on your tongue as possible to scrape off the offending bacteria.

Gently clean the top of your tongue with the toothbrush.

To flush away mucus and bacteria, try gargling with saltwater.

For a quick cover-up eat fresh parsley or mint, or use a mouthwash.

Tea Tree Oil, is a natural cure for bad breath when used as a toothpaste additive. Simply add a drop of the oil to your toothpaste right before you brush.

You can also create a Tea Tree Oil mouthwash by adding 3 drops of the oil to a cup of warm water. Gargle this solution two to three times a day, preferably after each meal.

Clean your sinuses. Since bad breath can be caused by any number of sinus problems, some people get relief by “washing” out the area inside your nose where the sinuses drain, says Dr. Fedok. If you want to try it, use a saline solution in a blue-ball syringe–the kind used to clean out ears. (Both the solution and the syringe are available at most pharmacies.) “you’ll have to refill the syringe several times. Spray the saline up each nostril, letting the solution drain out the other nostril and your mouth. It may take up to a pint of saline to wash out your sinuses,” says Dr. Fedok.

One more effective Home Remedy for Bad Breath is Fennel. Fennel is useful herb and can be used in many ways. Chew the leaves of this herb and allow the saliva to build up in your mouth. Or, mix the fillings of a fennel capsule with baking soda, make into a paste, and brush your teeth, gums and tongue with it. The liquid remains of fennel can be rubbed on your gums and tongue.

Cloves are a strong antiseptic. Make a tea by putting 3 whole or 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves in 2 cups of hot water, and steep for 20 minutes, stirring infrequently. Pour through a well strainer and use as a mouthwash or gargle two times in a day. This is one of the good Home Remedy for Bad Breath.

Bad Breath Causes

Almost everything we put into our mouth, particulary food and drink, can make it smell less pleasant. For the majority of people, the most frequent cause of bad breath is associated with bacteria that live in the mouth, particularly on the tongue. This bacteria can build-up as a result of poor oral hygiene and a lack of flossing.

Brush your tongue when you brush your teeth and after meals too. The tongue is like a lint catcher and it has to be cleaned off every so often to get that nice aroma to come through.

Wash the tongue with baking soda dissolved in warm water to reduce the acidity in your mouth making a less-friendly environment for the bacteria to grow.

Parsley, coriander, basil, rosemary, thyme, wintergreen, cardamom seeds, cinnamon bark, clove, fennel or anise seeds are great breath fresheners. Slowly chew any of these herbs and allow the saliva to build up in your mouth.

Chew peppermint or carnation for better breath smell.

This remedy is one of the good home remedy for bad breath using coffee : Grind the fresh beans with few cardamom seeds and make into a reviving cup to be drunk without milk first thing in the morning (but avoid if you also have a hangover). This will help in curing bad breath.

Cloves are a strong antiseptic. Make a tea by putting 3 whole or 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves in 2 cups of hot water, and steep for 20 minutes, stirring infrequently. Pour through a well strainer and use as a mouthwash or gargle two times in a day. This is one of the good Home Remedy for Bad Breath.

Use a tongue scraper, which helps to remove dead cells, food particles and bacteria from the tongue. A tongue scaper is a special plastic instrument found in drug stores and some health food stores, that costs several dollars. In Ayurveda, a thick coating on the tongue is called “ama” and is thought to be caused by improper or incomplete digestion. Tongue cleaning with a scaper is recommended as a daily regimen to remove ama. The key is to do it gently and to rinse your mouth thoroughly afterward. If you can’t find a tongue scraper, use a toothbrush to clean your tongue

Rinse your mouth before sleeping with a glass of water with the juice of half a lemon added.
