Why does a bad cold cause me to gasp for breath in the middle of the night?

bad breath
themandrill5 asked:

When I get a REALLY bad cold, occasionally i’ll wake up in the middle of the night unable to take a breath, or breath out, without EXTREME difficulty. It lasts about 30 seconds or so. My unprofessional guess is that post-nasal drip has triggered my epiglottis to close, but it’s really scary and i’m not sure if that’s the answer or not. What is it and what can I do about it?

How to Cure Bad Breath?

james sameul asked:

Bad breath is breath that has an unpleasant odor. it’s also known as halitosis. This odor can strike from time to time, or it can be long-lasting, depending on the cause.

Millions of bacteria live in the mouth, particularly on the back of the tongue. In many people, they are the primary causes of bad breath. The mouth’s warm, moist conditions are ideal for the growth of these bacteria. Most bad breath is caused by something in the mouth.

Cure for Bad Breath

You should thoroughly brush your teeth twice a day and floss. Flossing helps to get the bacteria missed by your brush. If this is missed it will be left and bacteria will build up and bad breath will be imminent. Ideally brush in the morning and then in the evening.

Be sure to clean your tongue if a white layer forms this a surefire way that bad breath is on its way. You should also not to forget to brush your tongue.

Bad breath originates from the gums and tongue in a majority of patients. However, odor coming from the back of the tongue may indicate post-nasal drip. Bad breath also may occur in people who have an infection, gum disease, diabetes, kidney failure, or a liver malfunction. Xerostomia (dry mouth) and tobacco also contribute to this problem. Cancer patients who undergo radiation therapy may experience dry mouth. Even stress, dieting, snoring, aging and hormonal changes can have an effect on breath.

Everyone has had bad breath at one time. Whether it is the dreaded ?morning breath? or the ?onions with garlic on the side? breathe- we have all been there. Most of the time bad breath can be temporarily covered up with mints or mouth spray but the key word there is temporarily. While in the case of ?morning breath? which can easily be fixed with a good teeth brushing or the ?onion breath? which usually passes on its own, chronic bad breath likes to hang on. Breath mints, mouth wash and spray are no match. The culprit just keeps coming back.

The most common is called cysteine. This mixes with air as you exhale to give you bad breath. Egg has cysteine in it, while milk makes cysteine, so if you have a lot of dairy, when it’s broken down you’ll make this cysteine. But if you have a lot of eggs, you’re actually putting cysteine straight into your system. Eggs are a great source of protein, but eat too many and you can egg-spect some side-effects.

Halitosis refers to foul or bad breath, which is not an uncommon condition. Unfortunately, most people who offend in this respect are completely unaware of their problem.

It is obvious from this that there is no one easy bad breath cure, but, interestingly, bad breath remedies used by our grandparents are still very popular and often work quite well, usually by reducing the amount of bacteria in the mouth. One home remedy is to dissolve baking soda in water and wash the tongue with this. Another traditional bad breath cure is to rinse the mouth with lemon juice diluted with water, although this remedy may actually encourage bacteria growth since lemon juice does contain some sugar. Several different herbs are recommended as breath fresheners, among them aniseed, cloves, rosemary and thyme, all of which can be chewed or used as tea when stewed in hot water.

Ian Douglas at the University of sheffield’s school of dentistry, predicts that resistance to allicin would develop relatively slowly. This is because allicin works against the enzymes needed for bacterial growth and not against the bacteria itself. The agent is not present in raw garlic, but is formed rapidly by the action of allinase on the precursor once the clove is crushed.
