Most bad breath is caused by the bacteria that live in your mouth. They thrive in a warm, moist environment like your mouth, and you can even see them sometimes on the back of your tongue as a white section of the tongue. That’s why doctors use those long wooden popsicle stick-like things to swap the back of your mouth/throat for bacteria.
Random fact: there are more bacterial cells than human cells in a person’s body.
It’s rare to have stomach gases cause bad breath (unless there’s a burp or regurgitation) as there’s a physical flap between the esophagus and the stomach. Intestinal or kidney problems too are secondary causes of bad breath (less than 10% chance) — so in most cases, the source of bad breath is mouth bacteria itself.
Gum disease, dry mouth and certain medications for depression are the primary causes of bad breath. Alcohol-free mouthwash can help combat bad breath for up to 18 hours.
