Spike A asked:
Hi, My dog (Kitty) which is a Cock-a-Poo must have eaten some foxtails outside. She is only 11 months old and we really don’t want her to pass.
Any help would be good.
Such as non-surgical ways to remove the foxtail since our family is low income.
Thanks

WOW.
Get your dog TO THE VET.
Foxtails are bad bad bad.
You can’t get it out. That’s why they have VETS.
They have emergency vets all over. Take her there.
If you don’t get her there, she could very well die tonight.
Do you really want to be responsible for that?
And how low-income are you if you have a computer and internet? You can afford it if you really need to.
TO THE VET!
Take her to the vet, low income or not. You have a responsiblity. There are no free or cheap answers to be had here.
Mouth: Dogs can get foxtails in their mouth. The symptoms of a foxtail stuck in the gums or back of the throat include gagging, difficulty swallowing when eating, etc. If swallowed, foxtails can be passed. However, if it gets caught in periodontal pockets, the tongue, in between teeth or in the back of the throat, it can cause problems. You can tell if this has occurred, not only from the above symptoms, but also because the dog may have a “dead body” odor coming from the mouth. The vet will anesthetize the dog, then locate and remove the foxtail.
Then get the weeds out of your yard so it won’t happen again.
If she’s eating things out of the yard, other than grass, it could be a sign that her diet is not satisfying enough for her. Try adding canned food or some new treats into the mix.
As for the bad breath, Dentabone should take care of it…(Sorry dentabones aren’t really the cheapest things in the world, but it’s cheaper than a vet bill!)
give her a tea spoon of peroxide . it will make her puke up whatever is caught in her throat no more than a teaspoon though but be careful do it outside or some where you dont mind her throwing up. it will happen quick. not immediatly but within a few minutes. it wont hurt her but it will get anything out of there
Here’s a website about pet saftey & the foxtail plant :
I think the website is about how the plant sticks to the animal. If I were you, I wouldn’t be asking for advice on yahoo.com. I would make a quick trip to your closest vet hospital (or even Petco) and ask if it will endanger your Cock-a-Poo. Hope everything works out!!!
Your dog should be seen by a Vet as soon as possible. A fox tail can be a very big deal, especially if swallowed. If she gets to a vet soon enough it may be a very simple procedure to remove and not require surgery. If you let this go, that fox tail could work its way into her bloodstream and then you will be faced with a very big bill for surgery.
She needs to see a vet ASAP. Work something out with the vet on the bill, but take her in. I know you don’t want to hear this but being “low income” does not make it alright to let your dog suffer and die. Find a way to take care of her.
I don’t know where you walk her, but if she came in contact with fox tails in your yard…it is your responsibility to cut them, dig them up, bag them and get them out of her exercises area. Do whatever it takes but make sure she has a safe area to walk and play in. Good luck.
