Interesting question. I have a 11 year old son who suffers from bad breath. His teeth are perfect and he is healthy.
I once took him to the doctor in regard to his breath but the doctor looked at me like I was crazy for taking him about his breath… I wanted to know if he had an underlying problem.
He has just recently developed allergies to things like bananas and cucumber…so I think it all ties in together.
I think it is related to the gut somehow and an intolerance to certain foods????
Sources of bad breath (halitosis):
– food and beverages
– smoking
– plaque and tartar
– food impaction between teeth, under dentures, under bridges, under gums… it literally decomposes in your mouth
– gum infection
– periodontal infection
– deep tooth decay
– sinus infection
– digestive tract disorders
– regurgitation
– bacteria buildup on tongue
– dirty dentures or oral appliances
– yeast infections
– acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (ANUG)
– advanced oral cancer
– poor oral hygiene
– lung disease
– dry mouth (xerostomia)
– pharmaceuticals
bad breath has a lot of causes and it does not only come from the mouth it can also caused by stomach related illness. to be sure of the cause of your bad breath, seek the help of a dental expert. all bad breath treatments can come appropriately when you have determined the cause of it.
the key to get rid of bad breath is to keep the mouth hydrated and by having a good program of oral hygiene. for more tips on how to get rid of bad breath visit
Some of the conditions that trigger bad breath and halitosis include:
a dry mouth
thick saliva
excess mucus in the throat
Post nasal drip
A diet high in proteins (dairy foods, red meat, beans, etc.)
smoking
Alcohol (in adult beverages or even in your mouthwash)
Hormonal changes
Medications which have dry mouth as a side-effect (anti-depressants, high blood pressure medications, anti-histamines, etc.)
History of diabetes
special types of diets (i.e. The Atkins Diet or other high protein diets)
excessive use of “old-fashioned” oral products (containing alcohol and sodium Lauryl Sulfate)
There are a lot of possible causes but I’ve found only one cure — therabreath. It is a line of oral care products invented by Dr. Harold Katz, bad breath expert and it oxidizes your mouth and kills the smelly bacteria. I’ve been using it and my mouth feels all the time and I don’t have to worry about the bitter, metallic, taste. More info about therabreath at.
