Mr Krabs created a secret ingredient for a breath mint that he thinks will cure the bad breath people get from eating crabby patties. He asked 100 customers with a history of bad breath to try his new breath mint. He had 50 customers (Group A) eat a breath mint after they finishes eating a crabby patty. The other 50 (Group B) also recieved a breath mint after they finished the sandich, however, it was just regular breath mint and did not have the secret ingredient. Both groups were told that they were getting the breath mint that would cure their bad breath. Two hourse after eating the crabby patty, 30 customers from Group A and 10 customers from Group B reported having better breath than they normally had after eating crabby patties.

The independent variable is the thing that you change.
In this case, it is whether or not they are given the breath mint with the special ingredient.
The dependent variable is whether they (think that they) have bad breath or not – the experiment is hoping to show that it ‘depends’ on the independent variable.
The independent variable, otherwise known as the manipulated variable, is the factor in an experiment that you change. The factor that was changed in this experiment was the ingredients. the dependent variable is the factor that is affected after the experiment is carried out; therefore, the dependent variable is the customer’s breath.
The independant variable would be the breath mints and how Mr. Krabs gave a different one to group A and B. The dependant variable would be the Crabby Patty since this variable didn’t change. I think this is right!!.

That’s a bad experiment, by the way, because bad breath isn’t being measured well. They should be breathing into a gas chromatograph, and the substances that lead to bad breath should be measured quantitatively.
