I have an italian greyhound that is about a year and a half old and he has REALLY bad breath. I have tried greenies, getting his teeth cleaned, raw hides and nothing is helping! He doesn’t eat scraps! He has no cavities or anything b/c the vet checked last week when he cleaned his teeth. Anyone have any suggestions as to what I could do for his breath!

There is something called slup’n fresh. You get it at wal-mart and you add it to the water. I just brush my dogs’ teeth.
I’d get him checked out by another vet. A one and a half year old iggy should not have bad breath, with proper dental care. Might be something else happening to cause it.
Try switching dog foods and/or brushing his teeth regulary
Probably a combination of his food and his body chemistry. If the chlorophyll in the greenies didn’t stop it, try mint, but there may be no good solution except experimenting with food. what does the breeder say?
Some dogs do seem to have bad breath no matter what one does. My sister’s dog is like that and he is very well cared for and has a diet suggested by a vet. I don’t think it matters what breed the dog is. They do make dog toothbrushes (a rubber thing one puts on the end of their finger, then inserts the finger in the dogs mouth to clean the dog’s teeth.) There is also dog toothpaste. I guess you could try that. Hope it helps.

Bad breath has got to be caused by something, usually by poor dental hygiene, but sometimes by disease. Keep asking your vet until he answers you or go to another vet.
there are products you can purchase to put in the water. One that is sold by the vet I work for is called oxyfresh. i am not sure if you can purchase this product at petstores etc. or not.
Greyhound dogs tend to have really bad breath and teeth problems so you will have to get used to it to an extent. However there is a sort of mouthwash you can purchase from your vet that you just pour amount into the water everyday and it gives them a minty smell. I don’t think it can be bought at pet stores but can try it, I think it is called oxyfresh but i’m not positive.
I have a cheaper solution than what the vet can give you, but it’s more labor-intensive.
Get some ordinary Listerine and a soft toothbrush for babies. Dip the toothbrush in mouthwash and brush his teeth daily. This way, he won’t be drinking the mouthwash, so it doesn’t need to be animal-safe. It cut down my whippet’s halitosis.
They now make some really great antibacterial sprays and water additives for dogs. CET makes a water addtive that our practice rec. all the time. Its so easy to use and kills the odor and tartar causing bacteria in their mouths every time they drink. Its also great if you have multiple pets instead of trying to treat everyone individually. CET also makes rawhide chews with the same antibacterial ingredients that are in their doggy toothpaste if greenies arent doing the trick. I know you can get the chews and the oral rinse at petmeds,com but I dont think they have the water additive. You may want to ask your vet. Good luck.
Hi. I have the same kind of dog, and his breath is bad, too. But he is only 4 months old. We get BreathBusters dog treats, and those do help.
But also, he gets body odor very quickly compared to my other dogs. Do you have this problem too? I find that he needs a bath much more often than either of my other two dogs. I’m not sure why, and I wonder if they are just a “stinky” breed?
