Do you have his teeth cleaned? I brush my Sheltie’s teeth every day or every other day. And she gets them cleaned by a vet twice a year.
brush his teeth and tongue
Smell the other end, and see if it’s similar. He might be licking around back there. get him some doggy breath mints
He may need a dental cleaning. Will he let you look at his teeth? If so, lift his lips and cheeks up, and look at his teeth. He could have a heavy tartar build up and possible tooth decay.
Your best bet would be to let a veterinarian look at him, there could be other reasons for bad breath.
Dogs eat all kinds of rotten stuff. Like dead stuff. So, if the breath smells rotten…..it probably is.
Step2Take your dog to the veterinarian for a professional dental cleaning. The vet can also determine if gingivitis, periodontal disease or plaque build up are causing the bad breath.
Step3Examine your dog’s food. If he is eating raw meat, he will have bad breath. Some canned foods also produce foul smelling breath. Try switching him to dry food and see if it improves.
Step4Notice if your dog is eating garbage or feces. Eliminate this from his diet by either immediately picking up his feces or preventing access to the garbage can.
Step5Visit the veterinarian if his bad breath persists; this could be a symptom of a liver or kidney disorder. It may also be the result of decaying teeth or gum problems that the veterinarian must take care of immediately.
get yip yap mints for dogs
He probably needs his teeth cleaned by the vet. Give him a raw, butcher’s bone a couple of times a week.

How old is he? I’ve found with my dog (a Jack Russell) that her breath has become almost unbearable over the last few years since she’s been getting older. Unfortunately dental chews seem to be a bit of a waste of money! If it’s really concerning you it might be best to ask a vet.
Remember dogs can lick parts of their bodies that are less than clean. I started brushing my Boxer’s teeth daily and it made a major difference.
He has bad breath because he is a dog. I have had a few dogs & they all had beautiful clean teeth but their breath would knock your socks off. However, you can go to the pet store & buy breath mints for your them. They do help & my dogs loved them.
ok dogs breath dont get clean from brushing them is it a puppy if so all puppys have bad breath. they grow out of it soon
It is most likely what he is eating. I recommend dog breath mints- you can find them at pet stores and Bed Bath and Beyond if there is one near you.
Dogs need to chew on things like rawhides to naturally clean their teeth. If they don’t canstanly have something to chew on, or if their teeth aren’t brushed at LEAST once a week, tartar, and plaque builds up, just as it would on your own teeth.
Also, read the ingredients in your dogs food, and tell your vet what they are. Ask if there is something that is too rich or something that is missing or not a suffecient amount of. There may be some things in there that are harder to get off of teeth, and there may be too much of that ingredient for your dog. I have found that different dog foods make it easier or harder to keep your dogs teeth clean.
Also, feeding your dogs dry or wet dog food…
If you feed wet, your dogs teeth are going to get food STUCK on their teeth, and its not going to smell too good when its been there for weeks. Dry dog food will help to break food off of your dog’s teeth, and keep them cleaner.
The best things you can do are…
Make sure your dog food is not too rich.
Brush or scrape your dogs teeth at least once a week (your dogs gums will bleed a bit for the first couple of times).
Make sure you dog has something hard to chew on all the time.
The most common cause of bad breath is bad diet!!
Periodontal disease is epidemic amongst our pets and commercial processed food is the direct cause. Did you know that more than 80% of dogs have developed this condition by the age of three? And that it is directly linked to auto-immune disorders and organ failure?
Do your dog a huge favour and ditch the processed crap. What your dog should be eating is raw meat, bones and offal NOT cooked grains, preservatives and colourings. Not only is a raw meaty bone much more digestible for your dog it will keep his teeth sparkling too.
** owner and breeder of raw fed dogs and three cats (3, 8 and 16) who NEVER need their teeth cleaned.
** Dogs are not meant to have bad breath, a doggy odour or huge sloppy poop. This is all directly caused by an inappropriate diet.
My dog always had bad breath, then 2 weeks ago I thought he might have an ear infection(it was a brain disorder unfortunately)manageable but sad.Anyway the vet thinking initially that it was an ear infection ,gave him antibiotics.Aftera week his bad breath was gone.So he must have had a mild throat infection.Did’nt help his brain thing though that is still ongoing.
First off, the key to solving the bad breath problem is in prevention. Have you recently taken your dog to the vet to have his teeth cleaned? You may want to take your dog to the vet as soon as possible to make sure that he hasn’t developed any harmful plaque or tartar, which can lead to periodontal disease. Afterwards, I would start preventive measures to keep your dog’s teeth healthy. Like humans, dogs can benefit from tooth brushing. K9HealthSolutions.com offers dental chews, rawhides, and dental care kits that can help you take care of your dog’s mouth, and hopefully solve your problem.
I hope this helps!
