Let’s be a little less graphic. Say the use of perfume or cologne. When you first apply it, you smell it, but shortly your sense of smell becomes accustomed to it and you don’t notice it at all. When someone approaches you and hasen’t been exposed to the scent they will notice it immediately, and comment something like ” boy, you sure smell good”. I doubt that happens very often under your proposed circumstances.
Let’s be a little more graphic. Say you rip one that reeks like burnt rubber. With a hint of popcorn. And a subtle boquet of rotten meat. Immediately to you it smells like perfume. At the very least, it does not offend your sense of smell. But you know – oh, yes you know full well – that anyone unfortunate enough to journey through that noxious cloud may not make it out alive. You will see the look on their face – pure horror. Their eyes will start to water. Their hand will involuntarily cover their nose. They will speed up. And yet, you stand there, gathering one more sniff, just to make sure they are smelling what you are smelling. For some reason, though, it just doesn’t smell too bad to you. Not because you are used to it by then, as numb nutz above explains. It happense due to a forgiving quirk of nature.
