BAD BREATH! How to fix my dogs breath?

bad breath
Yalow asked:

My two year old sheltie has horrid breath. Her teeth look good. I feed her eukanuba lamb and rice and lamb treats for snacks. Why does her breath smell so bad? When she yawns I almost fall over? What can I do to fix it?
No she soesn’t eat feces…She is outside when I am.
*doesn’t
Her teeth look white with a TINY bit of tartar on her canine teeth.

  1. Could be a medical problem, could be that she eats nasty stuff (like her own or another animal’s feces), could be that you need to brush her teeth, could be that gum disease has already started from lack of teeth brushing. If her teeth look white with no signs of tartar, and you can rule out eating icky things, you will want to at least call the vet for further direction.

  2. Did you know pet smart has some really good pet breath things like treats, bones, food, raw hides, and dog mints they work really good . good luck her.

  3. Brush her teeth or maybe buy some of the formula you can put in dogs’ water to tame their breath. There are also little chew toys with mint-flavoring as well as treats…

Dogs aren’t to be minty fresh, so don’t make a big deal out of it.

  4. You could start by improving her diet. To learn what foods rate low or high and why, see the link. Look for a food in the 5-6 star range, foods can be located locally by goin to manufacturer’s web site and using the store locator. (Eukanuba rates 2) Then take her to the vet, usually bad breath is a sign of something not right and maybe not just teeth, but it could very well be just her food. HTH

P.S. Dog toothpaste and toothbrushes can be found at any Petsmart or Petco.

  5. Barring any medical issues (ie tooth decay or abcesses), brushing her teeth is a good start. There is also a spray on the market that you can find at pet supply stores made by Petrodex (same company that makes toothpastes) that is wintergreen scented. This spray helps prevent plaque and tartar build up when used daily and in conjunction with a brushing routine. Try it! Doesn’t last very long so might want to try using it daily.

  6. had the same prob with our rottweiler but he had gone off his food for a day or 2 vet gave us tabs that act like actimel in humans to give his tummy a coating as you can”t give dairy products to dogs its most likely not a major thing and with all the ans your after getting your problem will be solved in no time best of luck
