How should I tell my boyfriend he has bad breath?

I am very straight forward when it comes to telling him things and I know i’ve hurt him a couple of times before. We both smoke cigarrettes but I know I keep checking my breath and washing my mouth. I don’t smoke as much as he does. I don’t know if he realizes how bad his breath can be sometimes, but when I tell him I don’t want to hurt his feelings…what should I do? how should I tell him?
