Is using breath spray on kittens an acceptable way of controlling their bad breath?

bad breath
Mr_Biggelsworth asked:

I did it last night for the first time and they foamed/ drooled heavily for a minute. After that they were back to normal.

I really do not want to get their teeth cleaned professionally because i’ve had dogs all my life and their oral hygeine has never been an issue.
for the record, the breath spray is in fact alcohol free. they do indeed exist.

  1. No, the alcohol is not good for them. Clean her teeth with a real pet product, available at most pet stores and definitely online, and feed her dry, crunchy treats.

  2. The breath spray isn’t a good idea. it will make more saliva in their mouth because it is bitter to them and more saliva may mean more stinky breath. just make sure they drink pleanty of water and have lots of dry food to crunch on and their breath shouldn’t be too bad. the bad breath comes from eating wet food usually.

  3. Never use products intended for humans.

They sell treats & ‘mints’ made for cats. Also consider feeding them better quality food (sometimes it’s the food you feed, that causes the odors).

  4. First of all you shouldnt be using a human breath spray on a kitten. Have you ever heard of animal testing and how horrible it is. If you are so concerned they make cat treats that fight decay and also make the cats breath fresh. They are available at any pet store or drug store. Use those not Human breathe spray.

  5. BAD IDEA!!!!

When my cat has bad breath, and it happens frequently, I make him eat Greenies.

They’re little green treats that cats LOVE and it controls their breath odor and cleans their teeth at the same time. TRY IT. It truly works.

  6. NOOOOOOOO !
All that stuff is alcohol based.

Daily Home Oral Care: Home oral care includes routine examinations of your cat’s mouth and brushing her teeth.

Home oral exam: As you care for your cat’s mouth, look for warning signs of gum disease such as bad breath, red and swollen gums, a yellow-brown crust of tartar around the gumline, and pain or bleeding when you touch the gums or mouth. You should also watch for discolored, fractured, or missing teeth. Any bumps or masses within the mouth should also be checked by your veterinarian.

Daily brushing: Regular brushing of your cat’s teeth is a very important preventive for oral and other diseases. A step-by-step procedure for providing this care is found in our article Brushing Your Cat’s Teeth.

Mechanical removal of plaque: Studies show that hard kibbles are slightly better at keeping plaque from accumulating on the teeth. There are veterinary dentist-approved foods and treats on the market that have shown that cats eating these foods have less plaque and tartar build-up.

Feline products that have received the Veterinary Oral Health’s Council seal of acceptance are as follows:

    Friskies Feline Dental Diet
    (Hill’s) Prescription Diet Feline t/d
Science Diet Oral Care Diet for Cats

  7. I don’t think that’s a very good idea for cats… I doubt if it would hurt the cats, but it probably pissed them off a little. It’s probably pretty harsh for them actually. When you use breath spray yourself it’s pretty strong. They make plenty of breath-freshening and teeth-cleaning treats for cats at the store, which should be sufficient. And crunchy food usually helps to get all that plaque and stuff off. If you don’t like their breath, they even make kitty mints, which I think is so funny hahaha… I would try those ideas instead of breath spray.

Edit*** After reading some of the comments, I agree that it’s bad to use the breath spray because of the alcohol in them… I didn’t know alcohol was in all breath sprays!! Definitely stay away from that!! 🙂

  8. Get your kittens some cat grass. It is sold in petstores, growing in a flower pot or the like. The cats eat it when they need a breath freshener. You can also plant some in a window box, or go outside and cut them some fresh grass every day in the summer. In the winter, the grass in a window box is better. Never, ever give an animal alcohol! There is alcohol in breath spray. It can kill your kittens. It’s not even good for humans, and it’s deadly for animals!!
For dogs, we always gave them slices of fruit or onions for their breath.

  9. I’m no vet. , but I know that that spray breath freshening stuff has high alcohol concentrations, so do you want to be giving your young kitten that much alcohol involuntarily? Why are you so worked up about your cat’s breath scent anyway, you already know cats are animals too and animals usually have at least one way to smell funky, one of my cat’s breath always smells funky after she eats dry cat food, but then again she is 17 (in human) and supplements her diet with wild game.

  10. i have never heard of a breath spray for cats. I have it for my dogs but not for my cat. I just brush his teeth every day. In the morning, after i brush mine, i brush his. My cat doesnt have bad breath.
